Selection Process

Edmonds Fire Department hires as part of a regional consortium, Public Safety Testing, and requires EMT certifications as a minimum requirement. Visit: www.PublicSafetyTesting.com for further information.

Public Safety Testing administers the written and physical-ability test (CPAT). When a vacancy occurs, PST forwards the names of the top-scoring candidates to the Department.

The Fire Department conducts an oral interview and Chief's interview. Psychological and medical testing and a background check follow for selected candidates. The Department uses the Rule of Ten. New-hires are sent to an academy for Firefighter I certification.

Volunteer (part-time, on-call, non-paid) Firefighter

Volunteer Firefighters provide assistance to public education programs, perform support tasks at major emergencies, and assist with delivery of emergency medical services. Training is provided. Must possess or be eligible to obtain a Washington State Vehicle Operator's license.
